MEDICINE

Whatever your horse's medical needs we are here to help. Medical colics can receive treatment on site, including intravenous fluid therapy where necessary, while we can undertake a full work-up including blood work, ultrasound, abdominocentesis and rectal examination to ascertain the cause of the problem. As always, we look at the overall picture, assessing likely triggers such as dietary changes.

We are also fully equipped to deal with respiratory cases such as equine asthma (formerly RAO or COPD) and our portable video endoscope allows us to obtain a full diagnosis, plan treatment and provide management advice.

Other issues that we can help with include unexplained weight loss, liver disease, ophthalmology, skin complaints including sarcoids, behavioural changes and headshaking.

Colic and Choke

Experience in dealing with the whole range of medical cases, from mild spasmodic colics to difficult impactions requiring fluid therapy. Taking a calm and considered approach, we will assess the situation and direct diagnostics and treatment appropriately.

Weight Loss

Unexplained weight loss can be a cause for concern. At Caballus you can expect a full and detailed examination, together with discussion regarding duration and changes. There are a variety of issues that can cause weight loss, many of which can be easily tested for with routine bloods. These include liver disease, Cushings and ovarian tumours. Further diagnostics including malabsorption testing can then be undertaken.

Respiratory Distress

As with people, horses can suffer from asthma (formerly RAO or COPD). We carry all necessary drugs to cope with an acute flare-up meaning that your horse will be breathing better in no time. Longstanding or recurrent cases can be managed with inhalers or oral medications and we are always on hand to advise.
Our thorough examinations will help us to ascertain whether the issue is infectious or not and direct our treatments appropriately. Other respiratory issues include influenza, strangles and infections of the upper respiratory tract. We can advise on all of these (see Vaccinations and Preventative Health Care page for more details).
Sarcoids

Sarcoids come in many types including occult, verrucose, nodular, fibroblastic, mixed and malevolant. They can spread over the horse's skin and pose a problem in warmer weather where they can weep and attract flies. We offer a variety of treatments including laser removal, treatment with AW5 cream or other topical treatments (protocol will be individually designed by world-leading expert Derek Knottenbelt) and banding for nodular sarcoids if possible.
